Adolf Goetzberger is considered one of the pioneers of solar technology and made a significant contribution to the development of solar energy with his visionary thinking and inventive drive. He recognized early on the need to develop alternatives to fossil fuels in order to meet the increasing demand for energy and combat climate change. With his vision in mind, a pronounced tenacity, courage and a great deal of persuasiveness, he founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1981 against much opposition.

Adolf Goetzberger always thought holistically and had the entire energy systems with all sectors in mind right from the start. Goetzberger's strategic orientation and his commitment to excellence laid the foundation for numerous innovations that significantly improved the efficiency and competitiveness of solar energy. Adolf Goetzberger's research always focused on the concrete applicability of the technologies and their feasibility on the market. He was not only a visionary thinker, but also a productive inventor.

Adolf Goetzberger was a person with clear principles. With his management style and the trust he placed in his employees, he created the basis for independent and autonomous work. In addition to excellent research work, the joy of work and team spirit were at the forefront.

Adolf Goetzberger was never interested in the status of professor or institute director. Rather, he was interested in motivating his employees in conversation and with his natural authority, and successfully driving them forward.

Adolf Goetzberger was able to inspire and thus created the "ISE spirit".

Adolf Goetzberger's life work is a shining example of how scientific innovation and wisdom can positively change the world. Adolf Goetzberger's work has not only driven technological advancement. His visionary thinking and tireless work have helped to transform solar energy from a niche technology into a central pillar of the global, sustainable energy supply and thus also made an important contribution to environmental protection.
